Q1: How did you get your start in the toy industry?

Michelle Savett: Nearly two years ago, I began sharing playful learning activities on @7daysofplay on Instagram. The inspiration for starting my social media account came from overhearing my kids’ librarian mention her account with thousands of followers. As I was already creating activities with my children and photographing them, I hoped that by sharing my ideas and photos, I might inspire others to engage in play. Since then, I have amassed an audience of over 1.5 million followers across social media, collaborated with numerous brands, and launched a website.

Q2: Why was it important to you to become a Genius of Play Ambassador, and what does play mean to you?

Michelle Savett: Play is paramount to my family. Whether it’s unstructured play or adult-directed playful learning experiences, I’ve noticed that my children are happiest and most engaged when they are playing. Unstructured play allows children to unleash their imaginations in a magical way while also tackling real-world problems and learning how to solve them independently. I advocate for child-led play, but we also enjoy adult-directed activities that offer hands-on opportunities, instead of just listening or completing worksheets.

Q3: What is your favorite toy and/or play memory?

Michelle Savett: I have cherished memories of imaginative play, such as setting up plastic chairs back-to-back to create a “school bus” and meticulously collecting my stuffed animals one by one. Playing house with my next-door neighbors was another common childhood pastime. I can’t pinpoint a single favorite childhood toy, but I do have enchanting recollections of visiting Toys“R”Us with my family. I remember thinking how vast and magical that place was!

Q4: Play benefits our emotional and physical well-being at any age. What steps have you taken to incorporate play into your daily routine, both in and outside of work? Any go-to activities?

Michelle Savett: 7 Days of Play has transformed play into a constant presence in my life. I spend my days brainstorming new ideas to share with my children and my audience, as well as searching for the best toys to complement our activities. When I’m with my children, I make a conscious effort to become fully engrossed in their world of play. I’ve found that sensory-based activities tend to be the most enduring. A little water can go a long way, and my kids adore science experiments that they can participate in hands-on.
