Pathaan is a 2023 Indian Hindi language action thriller film which is written by Aditya Chopra and produced by Yash Raj Films and directed by Siddharth Anand. The film stars Shah Rukh Khan , John Abraham and Deepika Padukone in lead roles . It is the fourth installment in the YRF spy universe after Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) and War (2019).
Principal photography of the film Pathaan began in November 2020 in Mumbai. Apart from India, the film was shot in various locations in Afghanistan, Spain, UAE, Turkey, Russia, Italy and France. Two of the film’s songs were composed by the Vishal-Shekhar duo, and the music was composed by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara. A music video for a song called ‘Besharam Rong’ was released before the release of the film. Deepika Padukone was seen in a saffron bikini in the music video, prompting right-wing Hindutva groups to protest and attempt to boycott the film. After making some edits to the song sequence, as well as some minor changes in the film, the Central Board of Film ApprovalLicenses the film for screening. The film cost an estimated ₹225 crore to make and another ₹15 crore was spent on print and advertising.
Pathaan was released in India on 25 January 2023 during the Republic Day weekend in IMAX , 4DX and Standard formats. It was released simultaneously dubbed in Tamil and Telugu. The film received positive reviews from critics and broke Indian box-office records for the highest opening day and opening weekend in Hindi film history. It also broke several revenue records in overseas markets.

In 2019, the Indian government abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir . This news affected General Qadir, who was suffering from cancer , and he decided to take revenge against India. He signs a contract with Jim, who leads a private terrorist organization called “Outfit X”. Meanwhile, former RAW agent Pathaan and his senior officer Nandini open a unit called “Joint Operations and Covert Research” (JOCR) and recruit agents who are forced to retire due to trauma or injury.
Colonel Sunil Luthor accepts Pathaan’s request and his team heads to Dubai to stop Outfit X’s plan to attack the President of India at a scientific conference. But they realize that the original plan of the terrorists was to kidnap the two scientists. Jim attacks the scientists’ convoy and Pathaan tries to stop him. A fight ensues, but later Jim is able to escape with a scientist. The Luthors reveal that Jim is a former Raw agent who was declared dead years ago. Jim’s wife and unborn child were killed by Somali terrorists, allowing Jim to fake his death in revenge against his country.
Meanwhile, Pathaan learns about the codeword “Bloodseed” and learns that the people killed in Dubai were ex-agents and that their money was transferred to a Pakistani doctor named Rubina Mohsin in Spain. After learning this, Pathaan travels to Spain, but is caught by Jim’s men, where he also learns that Rubina is a former ISI agent. When Jim leaves his hideout, Rubina attacks Jim’s men and escapes with Pathaan. Rubina informs that Raktabij is in Moscow and they go to Moscow to get hold of it before Jim. But Rubina betrays Pathaan and hands him over to the police. It is later revealed that Jim forced Pathaan to use Rubina to steal the blood seed. Pathaan is captured and taken to prison, but Tigercame and rescued him.
Three years later, Pathaan goes to Africa and captures Jim’s associate Rafi. He then meets Nandini and reveals to Nandini the two Saber missiles that Jim has bought, while Nandini reveals Rubina’s location in Paris . Pathaan meets Rubina, who reveals that the Bloodseed is a mutated lethal virus designed to resemble smallpox , created by the scientist Jim captured. Rubina apologizes to Pathaan for betraying Pathaan without knowing that her country would plan such an attack. They raid Jim’s lab, Jim escapes with the others but they manage to retrieve an orb containing the virus. Pathaan and his team then go to a lab to prepare a vaccine for the virus.
The film’s score was composed by Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara while the film’s songs were composed by Vishal-Shekhar.
After Vishal-Shekhar previously collaborated on the songs for Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), they reunited with producer Meghdeep Bose for music composition and song production.
The first single titled “Shameless Color” was released on 12 December 2022. The second single “Jhume Jo Pathaan” was released on 22 December 2022.
Pathaan’s release date was revealed on 2 March 2022 through an announcement teaser. A first look motion poster was released on 25 June 2022. [ The film’s teaser was released on 2 November 2022, coinciding with Shah Rukh Khan’s 57th birthday. The film’s teaser received 22 million views and over 1 million likes on YouTube in less than 2 days. The official trailer of Pathaan was released on 10 January 2023. The film’s trailer was screened at the Burj Khalifa on 14 January 2023 . Contrary to the norm, pre-release publicity was limited, with no media interaction or public events.
Pathaan was released in India on 25 January 2023, in standard, IMAX and 4DX versions at cinemas . which coincided with the dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu on the Indian Republic Day weekend. [17] Pathaan was the first Indian film to be released in the novel ice theater format. [18] The film was released on 8,000 screens worldwide, including 5,000 screens in Hindi and 450 screens in Tamil and Telugu versions within India. [19]
The film Pathaan is in the process of releasing in theaters in Bangladesh on 24th February, but it is yet to be released. [20] [21] The film is being imported into Bangladesh under the SAFTA agreement by director Ananya Mamun. [22] With this film, a Bollywood movie (Hindi language film) is being released in Bangladesh after eight years . [23]
Theater owners in Bangladesh claim that last year none of the films except ” Hawa ” and ” Paran ” could earn them decent income. Because of this, Pathaan threatened to close the cinema hall if the hall was not released. [24]
The film’s digital rights were acquired by Amazon Prime Video , where it is scheduled to release on 25 April 2023.
Pathaan received positive reviews from critics. On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 87% with an average score of 7.1/10, based on reviews from 23 critics.
Pathaan broke several box-office opening records for a Hindi film. [26] Worldwide, it became the first film in the language to gross ₹ 100 crore (US$13 million) on its first day. [27] It grossed ₹ 106 crore (US$13 million) worldwide on its opening day, including ₹ 36.69 crore (US$4.6 million) overseas. [28] Worldwide, the film crossed the ₹ 200 crore (US$25 million) mark in the first two days, the ₹ 300 crore (US$38 million) mark in the first three days and the ₹ 400 crore mark. (US$50 million) mark in the first four days, making it the fastest Hindi film ever. A music video for a song called ‘Besharam Rong’ was released before the release of the film. Deepika Padukone was seen in a saffron bikini in the music video , prompting right-wing Hindutva groups to protest and attempt to boycott the film. [35] Many called the song ‘vulgar’ and said it went against Indian culture . [36] Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra also criticized the song, saying it was “shot with a dirty mentality and found Deepika’s outfit offensive. The minister urged the makers to resolve the issue immediately. [37] A Muslim organization also objected to the song.
After making some edits to the song sequence, as well as some minor changes to the film, the Central Board of Film Approval cleared the film for release.
