Biography


Shahabuddin Chuppu‘s political activism began in his student years, serving as president of Chhatra League’s Pabna unit and Pabna Jubo League in 1974. Tragically, he was imprisoned following the brutal assassination of Bangladesh’s founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Majibur Rahman, in 1975. Despite this, Chuppu continued to play a crucial role in shaping Bangladesh’s political landscape, serving as the coordinator appointed by the law ministry in the case filed over Bangabandhu’s assassination. He also served as the chairman of the judicial inquiry commission set up after the 2001 general election to investigate the murders, rapes, and other inhumane acts committed by leaders of the BNP-Jamaat alliance.

Career


Chuppu‘s civic and professional achievements are numerous. He joined the Bangladesh Civil Service as a judicial cadre in 1982 and was elected general secretary of the Judicial Service Association in 1995. He completed his MSc degree from Rajshahi University in 1974, and later obtained his LLB degree from the same institution in 1975. Chuppu began his career in the Judicial Service in 1983, serving as a district judge until 2006 and discharging his duties as chairman of the Labour Court in 2006, lawyer of the Supreme Court from 2008-2011, and commissioner of the ACC from 2011-2016. Throughout his long career, Chuppu has performed various important assignments and has worked as a journalist for Daily BanglarBani from 1980-1982.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Chuppu is also deeply committed to serving his community. He is a vice chairman of the Board of Directors of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd. and represents JMC Builders Ltd on the board. He also serves as an advisor for NRB Global Bank Ltd. and is engaged in various social, educational, and cultural organizations throughout the country.

Presidency


The upcoming expiration of President Md Abdul Hamid’s term is a topic of much discussion in Bangladesh. Hamid, a senior Awami League leader and seven-time lawmaker, was elected president in the last two elections and has served as the country’s longest-serving president. However, the constitution does not allow for a third term, and Hamid’s tenure will officially come to an end on April 23.

Election proccess


The 22nd Presidential Election of Bangladesh is set to be a foregone conclusion as the ruling Awami League holds an overwhelming majority in the Parliament. The Awami League, which holds 302 out of 350 seats in the House, is expected to secure its nominee’s win with ease.

On February 12, Shahabuddin Chuppu, a prominent lawyer and member of the Awami League’s Advisory Council, was nominated as the party’s candidate for the Presidential Election. The nomination was officially submitted at the Election Commission of Bangladesh with the presence of key Awami League leaders including Obaidul Quader, the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, and Presidium Members Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman. Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, the Chief Whip of Parliament, was also in attendance.

The nomination was approved by Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina following a meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Party on February 7. After the submission of the nomination, Sheikh Hasina greeted Shahabuddin with a flower bouquet, symbolizing her support for his candidacy.

He is a graduate of Rajshahi University, where he obtained his MSc and LLB degrees in 1974 and 1975, respectively.
