Zayeda Khatun, a prominent figure in Gazipur’s political landscape, has recently gained attention as she takes the lead in the mayoral race. Known as the mother of Zahangir Alam, a former leader of the ruling party who was expelled, Zayeda has emerged as a strong contender in the closely watched election. She’s the current winning mayor of Gazipur City Corporation.

Early results indicate that Zayeda has secured an impressive 16,203 votes in 30 out of 480 centers, positioning her as a front-runner. Her closest competitor, Azmat Ullah Khan of the Awami League, garnered 14,117 votes, demonstrating a close contest between the candidates. Sarker Shahnoor Islam Rony, a supporter of the BNP who defied the party’s decision to avoid elections under the current government, managed to secure 1,301 votes.
Throughout the day, the election faced some challenges, such as reports of agents being forced out of centers, the presence of unauthorized individuals in voting rooms, technical issues with CCTV cameras, and slow functioning of electronic voting machines in certain locations. The Election Commission promptly addressed these issues to ensure a fair and transparent process. While a few arrests were made for interfering with the voting process, no instances of voter coercion or influence were reported.
Gazipur City Corporation Election
In addition to the mayoral position, the third Gazipur city poll also includes the election of 57 councilors and 19 women councilors for reserved seats. A total of over 330 candidates contested for various councilor positions, making it a highly competitive race.
Following the conclusion of voting, Azmat expressed his optimism about winning the race, describing the voting atmosphere as festive. Zayeda, the mayoral candidate who entered the race in place of her son Zahangir, commended the overall voting environment. However, Zahangir himself alleged that voters were subjected to pressure to support the Awami League at certain centers. Shahnoor, on the other hand, seemed content after casting his ballot, although he claimed that his agents faced intimidation.
As the mayoral race unfolds in Gazipur, Zayeda Khatun’s emergence as a strong contender highlights her determination and political acumen. With the election results yet to be finalized, the outcome of this closely watched race will shape the future of Gazipur and its leadership.
