Shabana Azmi is an Indian actress who was born on 18 September 1950 in Hyderabad State, India and also raised there. She is an actress, social welfare activist, has worked in various Bollywood and Hollywood films. She made her debut with the film ‘Ankur’ in 1974. She has worked with world renowned directors like Khawaja Ahmed Abbas, Kantilal Rathore, Shyam Benegal, Satyajit Ray, John Schlesinger, Nicolas Klotz, Roland Joffe and Ismail Marchant. As one of India’s finest actresses, she has won a record number of National Film Awards (5 times) in the Best Actress category. Filmfare Awards (5) and the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri (1988), the country’s fourth highest civilian award, and the Padma Bhushan (2012), the third highest civilian award, for her contribution to the arts. Shabana Azmi is a popular Indian actress who is also a social activist. In 1973, she signed the film Fasla directed by Khawaja Ahmed Abbas and started acting in Kantilal Rathore’s Parinay. Her first released film was Ankur (1974), directed by Shyam Benegal. She worked in several other notable films directed by Shyam Benegal such as Nishant (1975), Junoon (1978), Susman (1986) and Antarnad (1992). She acted in Satyajit Ray’s film Shataranj Ke Khiladi (1977) and Manmohan Desai directed Amar Akbar Antony, Parbarish and Prakash Mehra in 1980 were watershed commercial successes. She also acted in Mrinal Sen’s films Kandhar (1983), Genesis (1986) and Ek Din Achanak (1989). She also appeared in Mahesh Bhatt’s Orth (1983), Gautam Ghosh’s Par (1985), Aparna Sen’s Picnic (1989) and Sati (1989); ‘Sparsh’ (1980) and Disha (1990) directed by Sai Paranjpai; Albert Pintu Ko Gussa Kiyo Ata Hai (1980) directed by Saeed Mirza; she was widely appreciated for her work in films.
